How long SQF takes, and what it costs

Every cost line an Australian manufacturer pays, what drives each one, and a realistic month-by-month timeline from gap analysis to certificate.

The short answer

Plan for four to six months if you already run a working HACCP system, and longer if you’re starting from scratch. SQFI recommends at least 90 days of records before your first audit, so that sets the pace. The cost has four parts: SQFI’s registration fee (US$650 for one Food Manufacturing code), the certification body’s audit fee, which they quote for your site, training, and your own team’s time. The last one is usually the biggest.

The cost

What you actually pay for

Certification bodies don’t publish audit prices. They quote on your size, product category, scope and audit length, so we don’t guess a number here.

Getting quotes

Five questions to ask every certification body

Ask at least two licensed certification bodies for a written quote, and ask each the same questions so you can compare like with like:

  • How many audit days will my scope need, and what is the day rate?
  • Are report writing, the technical review and certificate issue included?
  • How are travel and accommodation charged?
  • What does an unannounced audit year cost, and what happens if a follow-up visit is needed?
  • Which edition will my audit use, and when can you book it?
The timeline

A realistic six-month plan

Our suggested plan for a site with a working HACCP system. The 90 days of records is SQFI’s recommendation; the rest depends on your gaps.

Month 1

Register, appoint, assess

Register in the SQF Assessment Database, name your SQF practitioner and backup, book their training, and run a gap analysis against the code.

Months 1–2

Write what’s missing

Fill the gaps the analysis found: procedures, prerequisite programs, supplier approval, food defence, recall. Train staff on each one as it’s finished.

Months 2–5

Run it for 90 days

Keep records every day. This is the part you can’t rush: the auditor wants to see the system working over time, not just written down.

Month 5

Internal audit and pre-assessment

Audit the whole system yourself and close what you find. An optional pre-assessment by a consultant or your certifier is a dress rehearsal.

Month 6

Certification audit

The certification body audits your documents and site and issues findings. Expect about a month to close them: Edition 9 allows 30 calendar days, so confirm the Edition 10 rule with your certifier.

Month 6–7

Technical review and certificate

The certification body reviews the report and close-out evidence, then decides on your certificate. It’s valid for one year, with an audit every year after.

Timing matters

Starting now? Build to Edition 10

SQF Edition 10 was released in March 2026, and new certification audits are expected to use it from early January 2027, subject to GFSI benchmarking. If you start today, your first audit will almost certainly fall in 2027, so build your system to Edition 10 from the start. It puts more weight on food safety culture, change management and environmental monitoring.

The full breakdown of editions, modules and the gaps a HACCP site has to close is in our SQF certification guide.

Keep it down

Four ways to spend less

1

Get the scope right

Audit time follows scope. Agree exactly which products, lines and modules are in before you ask for quotes.

2

Find gaps before the auditor does

A finding at the certification audit costs close-out time and sometimes a return visit. A finding in your own gap analysis costs neither.

3

Train your own practitioner

SQF needs a site employee as practitioner anyway. Investing in their training costs less than relying on outside help every year.

4

Make records easy to keep

The 90 days of records and every audit after depend on staff recording as they go. Fewer gaps means fewer findings.

Where EthicalHub fits

90 days of records, without the paperwork

EthicalHub runs your CCP records, prerequisite programs, supplier certificates and corrective actions in one place, from $69 a month per site. Your first 90 days of records build up as staff work, and the audit pack is ready when the certification body asks.

Questions

SQF cost and timing: common questions

How much does SQF certification cost in Australia?
There is no single price. You pay an SQFI registration fee (US$650 for a single Food Manufacturing code at the rate from April 2024), the certification body’s audit fee, which they quote based on your size and scope, plus training and your own team’s time. Get written quotes from at least two licensed certification bodies.
How long does SQF certification take?
SQFI says a well-prepared site may be ready in a few months. SQFI recommends at least 90 days of records before the audit, so even a site with a solid HACCP system should plan for four to six months. A site starting from scratch usually needs longer.
Do I need a consultant to get SQF certified?
No. SQF requires a site-employed SQF practitioner who has completed HACCP training, not a consultant. Many smaller sites use a consultant for the gap analysis or a pre-assessment, which is optional, to avoid surprises at the certification audit.
Should I certify to SQF Edition 9 or Edition 10?
If your first audit will be in 2027 or later, build your system to Edition 10. Edition 10 was released in March 2026, and new certification audits are expected to use it from early January 2027. Confirm the date with your certification body when you book.

Certified sooner. For less.
