More about Cafe Feminino Decaf
You know how roasted coffee beans usually look dark? Well, funny thing is, they might actually be medium to light roast. It’s just that when they take out the caffeine, the beans get darker in color and that stays even after roasting. But don’t just take our word for it, give it a taste and see for yourself!
Origin Story
Our Peru Café Femenino Fairtrade Organic Certified Swiss Water Processed Carbon Neutral coffee needs a long black to enable anyone to say it! The beans are exactly the same beans as our regular Café Femenino from the Penachi Coop.
The origin is in the very high altitude of the Andes in remote far north of Peru. Every year, the Women coffee producers celebrate their coffee with an Organic Coffee Festival where small pantomimes about coffee stories are judged. Traditional regional costumes are worn with pride, and the Coffee Queen is announced. We hope they don’t mind that we also celebrate their silky soft sweet coffee, even without caffeine!

Some people might think that de-caffeinated beans is an anomaly to all good reason to drink coffee – but that’s only because they don’t understand the process and the delicious taste that can come with it. It takes a bit of risk and an open mind to truly appreciate the taste of decaf, without judging it based on its name.
One company doing amazing things with decaf coffee is Swiss Water Process, based in Vancouver, Canada. They carefully sort and grade high-quality beans from around the world before starting the decaf process, ensuring that only the best beans are used.
The green beans are soaked in warm water, allowing the caffeine to dissolve into the water. The water is then passed through charcoal filters to remove the caffeine molecules. After that, the decaf water is returned to the same beans for about 8 hours to continue removing any remaining caffeine. Throughout this process, the water is charged with the existing flavor compounds to prevent any loss of taste. This means that all of the unique flavors from the origin beans are retained in the decaf beans, ready to be dried and roasted.
